چکیده

This paper highlights the usefulness and accuracy of high-resolution satellite images in damage detection after the occurrence of natural disasters. A strong earthquake struck the city of Bam in the southeast Iran on 26 December, 2003 and it brought massive destruction to the city and its surrounding rural areas. IKONOS and QuickBird (QB), high-resolution optical satellites, captured clear images of Bam a few days after the event. The city was also observed by QB about three months before the event. First, visual damage interpretation based on the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98) was carried out building by building, comparing the pre-event and post-event QB images. An automated damage detection method developed by the present authors was also applied to the post-event IKONOS and QB images. The results of these damage inspections were compared with field survey data and the accuracy and limitation of visual and automated damage detections were presented.

Remote Sensing Technology for Earthquake Damage Detection

Remotely sensed imagery data from satellites and airborne platforms have become important tools to assess vulnerability of urban areas and to grasp damage distribution due to natural disasters. The platform and sensors of remote sensing should be selected considering the area to cover, urgency, weather and time conditions, and resolution of images. Satellites with optical and/or SAR sensors can...

Damage Detection Based on Object-based Segmentation and Classification from High-resolution Satellite Images for the 2003 Boumerdes, Algeria Earthquake

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck the Mediterranean coast of Algeria on 21 May 2003 and the city of Zemmouri in Boumerdes province was most heavily damaged. QuickBird satellite observed the Zemmouri area on 23 May 2003. By image sharpening, buildings, cars and even debris can clearly be identified in a natural colour image. Preliminarily, the present authors performed visual damage in...

Tsunami Damage Detection Using Moderate-resolution Satellite Imagery

A moment-magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck the area off the western coast of northern Sumatra on 26 December 2004, which triggered massive tsunamis inundating the coastal areas in the countries along the Indian Ocean Rim. Various moderateto high-resolution satellite images were obtained before and after the tsunami attack and used for emergency management. High-resolution satellite (e.g. IKONOS) ...

Automatic Building Damage Detection Method Using High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images and 3D GIS Model

In this paper, a novel approach of building damaged detection is proposed using high resolution remote sensing images and 3D GIS-Model data. Traditional building damage detection method considers to detect damaged building due to earthquake, but little attention has been paid to analyze various building damaged types(e.g., trivial damaged, severely damaged and totally collapsed.) Therefore, we ...

Comparison of Earthquake Damage Evaluation using Change Detection and Thematic Classification

Because of the availability of high-resolution satellite imagery, remote sensing data has become an attractive source of data for identifying post-earthquake damage. Recently, several semiautomated methods for earthquake damage detection have been developed. These methodologies fall into two general categories: change detection and thematic classification. In change detection, both preand post-...
